PlayStation 6 Will Have Backward Compatibility With PS4 And PS5 Games, It’s Claimed

Sony is working on the PlayStation 6 as we speak, and there have been various rumors over the last few months and years. But one of the biggest claims has been posed, suggesting the PS6 will include total backward compatibility for all PS4 and PS5 games.

Many of you will know the PlayStation 3 pain when the console wouldn’t play most PS2 discs. Similar things have happened in subsequent generations, but a new rumor suggests Sony might be trying to make the PS6 an all-encompassing PlayStation powerhouse.

PS6 Backward Compatibility At Launch?

According to an April 14 episode of the Broken Silicon Podcast through Moore’s Law Is Dead (via Portal Viciados), it’s been claimed that the PS6 will have backward compatibility.

At the 2:28:20 mark of the episode, the pair gets onto the topic of the PS6 and a leaked document concerning its specs, and Tom explained:

“The PS6 handheld is a PS6, and what I want to leak today, because this document is years old, and it directly shows Canis [PS6 codename] backwards compatibility support. Another part of this doc it literally says ‘back [backward] compat [compatbility] PS4, PS5.’ Just says it right there.

I just wanna leak this today: The PS6, yes, it has backwards compatibility to 4 [PS4] and 5 [PS5], and they explicitly say it all over the place. Even the handheld, they explicitly say it runs PS6, PS5, and PS4 games.”

The video then shows what we believe is part of the leaked document being discussed. Tom doubles down that it will play PS4 games. Obviously, I think it’s safe to say the PS6 being backward compatible would be for the betterment of PS6 owners, especially those who have an extensive back catalog of physical PS4 and PS5 games.

Obviously, until Sony officially verifies this claim, take this with a pinch of salt. There’s also the fact that the spec document is even talked about as ‘years old,’ which means Sony could have had a change of heart since then.

Check out the podcast for yourself for a deeper discussion of the PS6 and other rumors and leaks.
