In a recent interview with Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Obsidian Entertainment revealed that it has no plans to develop a sequel to The Outer Worlds 2.
The second instalment of the franchise was in development for over six years, alongside Obsidian’s other action-RPG, Avowed, resulting in an inflated development cost. Ultimately, they failed to meet sales expectations, and The Outer Worlds 3 is off the cards—for now.
The Outer Worlds 3 Is Not In Development
In the interview, Schreier revealed that Obsidian Entertainment has numerous projects in the works, but The Outer Worlds 3 is not currently one of them. Instead, Obsidian want to keep making additional content for The Outer Worlds 2, though it wasn’t clear to what capacity that would present itself.
What the development team did make clear is that they want to shorten their development times. Brandon Adler, the director of The Outer Worlds 2, revealed that the game took longer than intended to develop, though it was partly due to the pandemic and technological challenges.
Having three games released so close to one another also played a part in hampering development. Around 280 employees work at Obsidian Entertainment, and they were all stretched between The Outer Worlds 2, Avowed, and Grounded 2, which didn’t help the company manage its resources as well as it could have.
