Is It Legal To Play Online In West Virginia?
Yes, online gambling has been legal in West Virginia since 2019, though it wasn’t until 2020 that DraftKings launched the first online casino in the state.
Table games, sports betting, and race betting are all legal under state law.
The West Virginia Lottery Commission (WVLC) is the entity in charge of overseeing the safety of online gambling sites and apps and is responsible for granting licenses and ensuring fair play for users.
If you are at least 21 years old and physically located within state lines, you can legally place bets and play games for real money at all West Virginia online casinos.

Are West Virginia Casinos Safe And Legit?
Yes, all licensed and registered online casinos in West Virginia are legitimate and safe and use secure servers and encryption for user data.
Look for the WVLC on the casino website or app if you’re unsure whether a casino is legit.
You can usually find their licensing information at the bottom of their home page.
To comply with the WVLC regulations, all online casinos must be partnered with one of the five physical retail casinos located in the state.
- BetMGM have partnered with The Greenbrier luxury resort in White Sulphur Springs.
- DraftKings operates under the Hollywood Casino in Charles Town.
- BetRivers has a deal with the Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack, and Resort in New Cumberland.
Like other states with legal gambling, WV online casinos offer players the chance to set limits on the time or money spent gambling and to exclude themselves from betting activities as part of their Responsible Gambling tools and practices.

And it’s easy to see why.
With a very generous welcome package and frequent promotions ranging from daily jackpots to free bonuses and real-life experiences like shopping sprees, free hotel nights, and more, they love to keep their customers happy.

With a 95.73% payout rate in just 1-2 days, BetMGM also has a huge selection of slots and table games, including progressive jackpots, plus a full sportsbook.
DraftKings Online Casino West Virginia
DraftKings started it all as the first online casino in West Virginia and they remain at the top of the list of best online casinos in the state.
With their roots in sports betting and fantasy sports, you can enjoy one of the best sportsbooks and plenty of sports-themed casino games.
But just because they started in sports doesn’t mean that’s all they offer.
They have tons of games for players who are more into slots than sports, including progressive slots and huge jackpots.
Their online casino app is fantastic with over 1,000 slots and exclusive live dealer games.
They also boast fast withdrawals, a range of payment methods, low minimum deposits, and solid customer service, plus a great rewards program.
BetRivers Online Casino West Virginia
The BetRivers Online Casino app offers players frequent promos but it’s their welcome package we think you will love most.
When you sign up as a new player, you can claim their money-back bonus to recoup any losses up to $500 in the first 24 hours.
With a low 1x playthrough, this is a solid deal for new players who want to try out their casino games.

And, with a 97.61% payout rate and a long list of online casino games, we’re sure you’ll want to stay and play.

We also love their live dealer games and video poker options, their referral program, their Game of the Week promo, and their loyalty program.

Worst Online Casinos In West Virginia
The first red flag you should look out for when choosing an online casino in West Virginia is if they’re not regulated by and registered with the WVLC.
If you don’t see that logo or their license number anywhere on their page, take your money elsewhere.
The second thing you want to check is where that license was granted.
If it’s an offshore license, meaning it’s from another country other than the US, you and your money won’t have the same protections should anything go wrong.
The best way to stay safe while having fun at online casinos is to only use trusted brands that are legally registered in West Virginia and have transparent terms and conditions for their customers.
Casinos registered with the WVLC have their games audited to ensure fair play and they must follow standard practices to guarantee their customers’ information and money are safe.
But because there are all types of scams and sketchy offers lurking on the Internet, here are three online casinos to avoid.
- Slots N Bets Casino has been known to offer fake games and has been operating without a license in the United States.
- BoomBet Casino has been operating with a fake license, has a low withdrawal limit, and has been known to take money out of dormant accounts.
- Casino Purple has been operating without a license in the USA and has been reported for unfair maximum win rules that negatively affect players.
Benefits Of Playing At West Virginia Online Casinos
Online casinos aim to please and cater to their players’ preferences and needs.
With competitive rates, frequent promos and bonuses, and cool giveaways, online casinos like to keep things fun and exciting for players.
Whether you like to hit the video slots on the weekends and play a cheeky game of blackjack now and then, or you’re a high roller who loves the thrill of placing big bets, there’s at least one West Virginia online casino that’s perfect for you.
Sign-up Bonuses
Sign-up bonuses are one of the best perks you can claim when you sign up as a new user for an online casino.
Register a new account and claim some fun extras like deposit match-ups, no-deposit bonuses, free spins, casino credits, and more.
Just make sure you read the Terms & Conditions carefully, as some of them require high playthroughs before you can cash out any winnings from bonus credits.
Welcome packages are a way for online casinos to attract new customers, and with plenty of casinos to choose from in West Virginia, you can expect to find competitive offers as a new player.
Of course, bonuses and prizes don’t stop after you sign up. Online casinos offer frequent promos and giveaways to their existing customers through their rewards programs.
If you’re happy with your current casino, check out what kinds of perks you can get from their loyalty program.
Every time you place a bet on eligible games, you should be racking up rewards and points that can be claimed or converted into cash and even real-life experiences.
Wide Variety Of Games
If you enjoy classic casino table games found at brick-and-mortar casinos, you will love the range of games, experiences, and progressive jackpots available at online casinos.
Choose from a wide variety of classic and 3D video slots, baccarat, roulette, blackjack, poker, dice games, and live dealer games.
You can also bet on your favorite sports teams through a licensed sportsbook, wager on races, and gamble on fantasy sports.
Easy Payments
Online casinos strive to make payments as easy as possible for players.
That’s why you can deposit funds into your casino account in several easy and safe ways, from credit and debit cards to prepaid cards like Play+ and virtual wallets like PayPal and Skrill.
Not all deposit methods are available for withdrawals, but the main casinos make it as easy and quick as possible for you to cash out your winnings.
24/7 Gameplay And Support
One of the biggest advantages of online casinos is you can access them and play at any time of day and night.
And to make sure everything goes smoothly, big-name casinos offer easy customer support directly through their apps or websites in case you run into any issues.
West Virginia Online Casinos Vs. Physical Casinos
We can’t deny the energy and excitement of being on a casino floor.
But you have to consider the money you spend on gas, parking, food, and drinks when you visit a land-based casino.
Plus waiting around if your favorite machine or table is busy.
And because there are only five brick-and-mortar casinos in the state, gambling at online casinos is much easier and more convenient if you’re a player in West Virginia.
If you’re not looking to splurge but just want to play a couple of hands or spin the slots for a few minutes, a physical casino might not be the best choice.
You can use online casino apps and websites from anywhere within state lines with an Internet connection and often get better odds, lower minimums, and frequent promos and special offers that are hard to come by at retail locations.
But visiting a physical casino can be a fun and more social experience to splurge on now and then. Who says you can’t do both?
Gambling Winnings In West Virginia
A common question about winning money at online casinos is whether or not you have to pay taxes on them.
The good news is, unlike other states, West Virginia does not tax your gambling winnings so long as you can provide proper identification. If you can’t, your winnings will be taxed at a 6.5% rate.
It’s important to keep in mind that gambling winnings are still subject to federal tax laws, so make sure you include them on your federal tax return forms.
How much the IRS will tax your winnings will depend on subjective factors like your tax bracket and total taxable income.
We suggest you keep a record of all your wins and losses throughout the tax year.
