Is It Legal To Play Online In New Jersey?
Yes, playing casino table games and poker online has been legal in New Jersey since 2013.
Sports betting was legalized in 2018, broadening the spectrum of gambling opportunities in the state.
Keep in mind that you must be physically located in the state of New Jersey and be over 21 years old to legally gamble in the state’s online casinos.
Online casinos in New Jersey are regulated by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) and must have their servers physically located within Atlantic City to receive a license and operate legally.
They have to be partnered directly with a licensed brick-and-mortar casino in Atlantic City, so make sure the website you’re using is attached to a physical casino.
Are New Jersey Casinos Safe and Legit?
Online casinos in New Jersey are safe and legal, but there are a few things to keep in mind before you start placing bets.
As we mentioned above, online casinos must be partnered with physical casinos in Atlantic City to legally operate in New Jersey.
That’s why a single physical casino and resort can operate several online casinos.
- The Borgata, one of the first online casinos in NJ, operates out of the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, which has also partnered with BetMGM and the Party Casino.
- Caesars Palace Online is the virtual casino for Caesars Atlantic City Suites, which also regulates 888 Casino NJ.
- The Golden Nugget Atlantic City Hotel, Casino & Marina operates the Golden Nugget Online Casino.
- Both Bet365 and Unibet work through the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
- The Resorts Casino and Hotel in AC has a pretty decent chunk of the pie, partnering with Resorts Online, DraftKings, and Mohegan Sun.
To make sure your data and money are safe when gambling online, check that the website or app you’re using has the casino’s registration and license number.
The DGE logo should also be visible. If you’re unsure, check online reviews from other customers or the DGE website.

Caesars Palace Online Casino New Jersey
When you think of established brick-and-mortar casinos, Caesars Palace is probably one of the first brands that comes to mind.
Operating out of their resort in Atlantic City, it’s easily one of the most recognizable and trusted names in gambling, and we can bet you’ll love their mobile app and the bonuses available at their online casino.
Their online platform is considered one of the best gaming experiences available with over 1,000 games to play and a payout rate of 97.65% in just 1-2 days.
Plus they have daily jackpots, frequent giveaways, promotions, and a solid rewards program that lets you spend your credits on online games or at their physical locations around the country.
BetMGM Online Casino New Jersey
MGM is a respected brand in the gambling world, so you can be sure that the games are fair and secure.
You can access over 800 games on their mobile app or online casino website and contact customer service directly should you need any help.
Once you’ve signed up and cashed in your no-deposit welcome bonus, you’ll have access to their exclusive games, including live dealer options.
You can play video slots, baccarat, blackjack, roulette, and lots more including standout live dealer games.
You can also participate in daily jackpots and special bonuses throughout the year, so check their website regularly to find the best deals.
And we’re sure you’ll love their software and security measures, their 95.73% payout rate, and their payout speed of 1-2 days.
PlayStar Online Casino New Jersey
If you want to soak in the feeling of being at a physical casino while playing your favorite games from home, PlayStar will pull out all the stops for new and existing members.
Their personalized concierge service is one-of-a-kind and will recommend specific games and offers according to your personal tastes.
PlayStar might not have the biggest game selection out there, but they make up for it in quality, regular promos, and one of the highest RTPs in the state.
And their welcome package is a pretty sweet deal with a 100% deposit match up to $500 plus 500 free spins.
Worst Online Casinos in New Jersey
If you want to spot an illegal online casino, check where their license was granted.
If it’s an offshore license, meaning it was issued somewhere outside the USA, or outside of New Jersey specifically, don’t risk your money, no matter what unbelievable promo they’re offering.
Promotions that seem too good to be true usually are.
And if they’re not regulated by the New Jersey DGE, definitely don’t trust them with your hard-earned cash.
Check the DGE website if you’re unsure whether a casino is legal or not.
It’s harder to spot a casino that has rigged its games, withholds payouts, or has insecure servers, so if it looks dodgy or has overly complicated terms and conditions, we suggest you take your money elsewhere.
When it comes to your money, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Here are three online casinos we think you should avoid:
- Planet 7 Casino isn’t licensed in New Jersey and has been reported for payment issues.
- Bella Vegas Casino isn’t licensed in New Jersey and has a low safety rating as well as high minimum withdrawals that can incur extra fees.
- Captain Jack Casino isn’t licensed in New Jersey and has been known to confiscate money from dormant accounts.
Benefits Of Playing At New Jersey Online Casinos
New Jersey’s online casinos tend to offer high returns and require low minimums, meaning you can make your money last much longer if you’re on a limited budget.
If, on the other hand, you’re a high roller and love the thrill of placing big bets, NJ online casinos also have you covered.
You can find tables, games, and even slots with high maximum caps that will beat most odds at physical casinos.
And online casinos tend to offer way more promos than their brick-and-mortar counterparts.
Sign-up Bonuses
If you’re a new player, you can take advantage of the sign-up bonuses and welcome packages most online casinos offer to attract new customers.
Open a new account and claim prizes like deposit match-ups, casino credits, free spins at the slots, and more.
Just make sure you read the Terms & Conditions carefully, as some of them require high playthroughs before you can cash out any winnings from bonus credits.
If you already have an account and aren’t interested in signing up for a new casino, check that you’re enrolled in their loyalty program so you can claim casino credits, giveaways, and special prizes.
Some casinos even offer their VIP customers rewards at their physical locations like free nights and events at their Atlantic City hotels and resorts.
Wide Variety Of Games
New Jersey online casinos have all types of classic games that have been adapted from their physical casino experiences.
From video slots and video poker to progressive jackpots and virtual table games including roulette, baccarat, and blackjack, there’s something fun for everyone.
Easy Payments
The best online casinos in New Jersey offer easy deposits and withdrawals so you can keep playing and cashing in your winnings.
For payments to and from your online casino accounts, use your bank account, credit card, or virtual wallets like PayPal and Skrill.
Some casinos also allow online users to make cash deposits and withdrawals at their physical locations.
Just read the T&C to make sure your chosen casino offers the payment options that will suit you best.
24/7 Gameplay And Support
Another benefit of online casinos is you can play your favorite game at any time of day and easily contact customer support if you run into any issues.
New Jersey Online Casinos Vs. Physical Casinos
Though it’s hard to beat the atmosphere, energy, and excitement of being on the floor of a brick-and-mortar casino in Atlantic City, online casinos are way more convenient and affordable for the regular gambler.
Not only do you not have to hustle to find a table or a free machine as you do on a busy weekend night in AC, but the minimum buy-ins for your favorite games will be significantly higher at a physical casino than online.
And if you don’t live in Atlantic City, going to a physical casino also means driving there, parking, and probably getting a room for the night, because who are we kidding?
You’re not going all the way there and back just to spend a couple of hours on the casino floor.
Add the drinks, food, and other expenses you’ll accumulate by the time you’re ready to go home, and you’ve already racked up a hefty bill.
If money’s not an issue and you want to play big on the slots, you also have better odds at winning big online than on the physical machines, which usually have lower maximum caps per game.
Of course, no one is forcing you to choose! You can always split your time between physical casinos and online games and enjoy the best of both worlds.
Gambling Winnings In New Jersey
If you’re wondering about taxes, the state of New Jersey will tax your gambling winnings at a flat 3% rate.
Keep in mind that this applies to both residents and non-residents and winnings on sports betting and casino games are all taxable.
Because the IRS considers any casino winnings taxable income, you will need to include your gambling wins in your federal tax return.
Federal taxes will depend on factors like tax brackets and total taxable income.
We suggest you keep a record of all your wins and losses throughout the tax year.
